Although there are a lot of tourists that reject some travel destinations based on prejudices, real travelers don’t let those prejudices stopping them when choosing a great destination to enjoy a nice family holiday. A great city to enjoy a family break is Marrakech, one of the most beautiful and authentic cities in North Africa.

Marrakech

Going to Marrakech? With children? Isn’t it dangerous? Yes it can be, of course! Every place on earth will be dangerous if you don’t plan your vacations carefully enough. Morocco, in general, is a very peaceful country, where visitors from all over the planet are always welcome. It is not advisable to come with babies or very young children, but if your child is older than seven, he will enjoy a great time while discovering a very different culture.

Precautions to be taken into account in Marrakech

  • During the summer, the temperature can be 50 degrees Celsius, so it is advisable to travel during autumn holidays, Christmas or Easter.
  • It is essential to drink bottled water and do not allow children to drink water from any public place like the popular drinking fountains at Djemaa el Fna Square.
  • Do not travel during Ramadan (last full moon of summer), because many restaurants could be closed.

Fun with Children in Marrakech

  • Given these precautions, children, especially the older ones, will have a great time walking the medieval streets of the medina, browsing among the stalls of the souks, hearing the call to pray and witnessing it firsthand.
  • It is essential to visit the dyers’ neighborhood, with a local guide if possible, and explore the Djemaa el Fna Square, during the sunset, to enjoy its storytellers, fire eaters, puppeteers and snake charmers.
  • How about a camel ride through the desert? No child is going to say no to that adventure.
  • While in Marrakech there are not children´s playgrounds, you are not traveling there to do the same like at home, are you? Therefore, it is important to introduce children to the local culture: visit the Menara Gardens, the Palace of Dar Mnebhi, Tiskiwin House, an authentic Moroccan house, The Koutoubia Mosque with its minaret copy of the Giralda in Seville, the Dar Si Said Museum, etc…
  • The trip should also be good for children to have the opportunity to try the local cuisine and, if possible, to access some of their traditional cafes. From 8 to 10 years, and taste one (only one) nice cup of tea with mint.
